chapter 2 and 3

“Where most children are proof of their parents’ love, I was the proof of their criminality.”(p.27)

This line stuck with me. Trevor's very existence was considered illegal under apartheid because his parents were of different races. It's hard to imagine being born into a world where your birth is seen as a crime. It made me think about how unfair systems can be, judging people for things they have no control over. It also shows how strong his mother was, choosing to have him despite the risks. This quote made me think about my own mom. She raised me and my sisters by herself. Obviously we weren't illegal by any means but the strength to take on parenting alone is similar to how Trevors mom chose to be a parent even if that meant going against the law.

“My grandmother always told me that she loved my prayers. She believed my prayers were more powerful, because I prayed in English. Everyone knows that Jesus, who's white, speaks English.”(p.40)

This quote made me laugh, but also think deeply. It's a funny way to show how colonialism affected people's beliefs, even in religion. The idea that praying in English makes prayers more powerful shows how deeply ingrained the preference for white culture was. It made me consider how language and race can influence perceptions of legitimacy and power. Trevor uses humor to point out these serious issues, which makes them more relatable and impactful.

In Chapter 2, Patricia navigates a world filled with institutional racism by being determined. She doesn't let the laws of apartheid stop her from living her life and raising her son the way she wants. Trevor's early upbringing was filled with love, discipline, and a strong sense of identity, thanks to his mom.

Chapter 3 gives us a glimpse into life in Soweto. It's a place filled with challenges, but also with community and resilience. Trevor grows up surrounded by strong women who teach him valuable lessons. What struck me most is how, despite the hardships, there's a sense of hope and determination to create a better life.
