He sat down at his desk hunched over and squinting at his screen with the book down in front of him. He watches videos and plays games, confident that he can skim through all three chapter and do well enough on the exam. He gets bored of playing games so he climbed into bed and wraps himself in a blanket. He scrolls aimlessly through his phone trying to pass the time. The exam is in the morning but he still stays awake until 4:00 in the morning. With hardly any sleep he attempts the exam, and much to his surprise he doesn't recognize any of the material. He is trying to use simple deduction and the multiple choice and is straight gambling on the true or false portion. A large vocabulary is his strong suit so he ends up killing the short answer portion of the exam and that's what saves his grade.
So that may or may not have been a true story, but I can improve my reading assignments by taking my time and reading the material. I usually wait until the last minute and skim whatever I have to read but most of the time i can remember like 80% of the material. I end up hoping we wont be using it again because it forgotten shortly after. I also have trouble analyzing text, so without being told I cant figure out if something I'm reading is important or not, unless its blatantly obvious. But that all comes down to slowing down and reading the material and attempting to understand rather than blitzing my way through it and hope I do well.
Benjamin Percy comes to realize that reading too fast, he ends up missing the finer details. He reads so much so fast that he can hardly recall most of it. The importance of reading as a writer is having a greater appreciation and understanding for what you've read. Its like eating something as a chef. Knowing every detail of what went into the dish and how the ingredients were prepared and how everything was cooked, plated, and served, you have a greater appreciation of the dish.
Being a slow reader means what it says. But to go deeper, when you read something slowly you are more likely to remember everything. There will be details that you'll actually notice because you didn't skim. There is certain story elements that make more sense to you. It's like if you skip a boss fight cutscene then you miss out on why that boss does what they do or how they ended up as they are. But anyway when we are given reading assignments leading up to essays, reading them slowly will help us write better essays.
He sits in his dark room with the fan on. He stares at his computer screen reading the details of the writing assignment he has to due. He sees that its due tomorrow at 11:59. He plays video games all night and goes to work in the morning. When he gets home he's tired from work and chooses to take nap. He gets into bed and wraps himself in his heated blanket. He scrolls through his phone as he waits for it to warm up. As he dozes off he remembers he has a writing assignment due to tonight, but after being awake all night and working he simply knocks out. He wakes up hours later and its 9:25. He jumps out of bed and chugs the cold half drank water bottle from his night stand as he rushes to his computer. He spends 20 minutes staring at his computer screen trying to think of what he's going to write about. After picking a topic he types as fast as he can while paying no mind to the rubric he strings together 4 pages which was the minimum given in the writing assignment instructions. He submits the assignment at 11:58 just in time.
Numbers 4 and 6 are the most important. Writing is a tough subject for me. Seeing that I have to write 3 pages long essays can be daunting. But number 4 breaks down what a basic essay is. It is a good thing to keep in mind so you don't get demoralized. Number 6 is the most important one of all in my opinion. How can you introduce something if you don't know what your writing about. A well written body paragraph is the back bone of an essay usually. After writing the body you can make a proper introduction and conclusion. These concepts will help me write better. The main thing I lack is reading comprehension and I get lazy. But using slowing down and reading things as a writer, and writing with a better understanding of what I'm talking about as well as not doing assignments on the due date, will help me improve my writing.
Hi, I can realte to reading though book quickly because i also used to do that. One time, I got an F on an assigment because i couldnt remember anything from the book and could not answer the questions correctly. So, i learned the hard way that reading slowly and carefully is better in the long run.
