chapter 6 and 7

Chapter 6 quote:
"it was discipline from a place of love."(pg 84)

Trevor is talking about how his mom handles his behavior. For minor issues they exchange letters and bigger issues, his mom hits him. I like this quote because my mom was similar to Trevor's. We didn't write any letters, but when I did something wrong my mom would discipline me. It took me while to understand that she did so because she loves me and wanted me to be better. It was also over quickly because soon after she would call me out to eat dinner or take me shopping.

"You do not own the thing you love." (pg 100)

This is when Trevor realized that even though he loved his dog Fufi so much, she didn’t just belong to him. Fufi had another family too. Trevor knew then that real love isn’t about control or owning someone. It’s about letting them go even if it hurts you.

Trevor basically says smartphones made us forget how to be bored. Like before phones, you had to just sit with your thoughts or actually talk to people. Now everyone’s just glued to their screens. I agree for sure. People can't even wait in line without pulling out their phone for no reason.

Trevor and his mom had this odd dynamic. Trevor would act out and challenge authority and his mom would handle it in her own way. For minor disputes they would write back and forth letters, and for worse things Trevor's mom would hit him.

Trevor learned that with his dog Fufi, even though he thought she was loyal only to him, she was actually sneaking off to another house too. It hurt him but taught him that you can’t fully control who or what you love. For me, I guess I can't relate. Both of my cats stay indoors. They play, sleep a lot and explore the house. But love does not mean control. Love is about acceptance and sacrifice and so much more.
